Trancoso foi fundada no inicio da colonização portuguesa pelos Jesuítas (1586), com o nome de São João dos Índios, atualmente denominada Praça São João Batista que é chamado de Quadrado em volta do qual se desenvolveu o vilarejo.
Repleto de frondosas amendoeiras, mangueiras, flamboaiãs e diversas arvores nativas, com a bela e antiga igreja de São João ao fundo e uma vista panorâmica deslumbrante para o mar e horizonte.
Há alguns anos, deixou de ser a vila rústica e isolada, descoberta pelos hippes nos anos 70 para se tornar o destino turístico dos antenados e vips.
Nas casinhas simples e coloridas do Quadrado, hoje patrimônio cultural e histórico, a circulação é somente a pé ou em bicicleta.
Hoje há bares, restaurantes, pousadas cheias de estilo, lojinhas de artesanato e butiques de grifes famosas.
Todo o charme desse vilarejo é cercado por praias belíssimas e uma natureza exuberante com um clima ameno o ano inteiro.
Trancoso was founded at the beginning of Portuguese colonisation by the Jesuits (1586), with the name of São João dos Indios, currently named Plaza São João Batista which is called " Quadrdado " around which developed the village.
